How to Plan Your Study

BA Degree Requirements - Psychology

Review the degree requirements.  Contact your advisor frequently for degree and registration reviews.

In general, a BA degree requires a minimum of 120 semester credit hours with:

  • 30 of these semester credit hours completed at Argosy University/Phoenix (no more than 90 transferred credit hours).
  • 42 of the 120 semester credit hours to be in Upper Division coursework (junior/senior level in a 4-year degree program).
  • Completion of requirements within the following three major areas:

      a.  45 semester credit hours in courses required for Psychology Major (and includes any concentrations herein) [See below for Psychology requirements]

      b.  42 Semester Credit Hours in General Education courses [Math (6),  English/Communications (6), Humanities (6), Social Sciences (6), Natural Sciences (6), and 24 hours of additional elective courses in the preceeding areas of study]

      c.  33 Semester Credit Hours in General Electives (Your choice of approved college-level coursework)

Use this worksheet to evaluate your progress towards your degree. 

Meet with your advisor to verify which courses have been transferred in from previous college study to fulfill degree requirements.

I.   Requirements for the Psychology Major  (45 semester hours) 3 semester credit hours for each of the following courses

Psy 101:  Introduction to Psychology

Psy 302:  Research Methods

Psy 210:  Statistics (for Social Sciences)

Psy 310:  Social Psychology   OR  Psy 300:  Developmental Psychology

Psy 350:  Physiological Psychology OR Psy 360: Cognition & Learning

Psy 320:  Industrial/Organizational Psychology

Psy 400:  Counseling Theories

Psy 405:  Interviewing Techniques

Psy 492:  Advanced General Psychology (Capstone Course)

15 hours in approved Psychology courses (may include choices for Substance Abuse Concentration or other courses of interest) 

II.  General Education Requirements (42 semester credits hours:   6 semester credit hours in each of the five areas of study (30 semester credit hours) plus 12 semester credit hours in electives, which must be selected from the five areas of study.

Areas of Study (See Argosy University Catalog for courses which quality)

Math (6 hours)                               (Complete 3 credit hours before taking Psy 210:  Statistics)

English/Communications (6 hours)   (Complete English 101 before admission to program)

Humanities (6 hours)

Social Science (6 hours)

Natural Sciences (6 hours)               (Human Anatomy/Physiology is recommended for Psychology majors)

Plus 12 semester credit hours in any of the above 5 areas of study.

III.  Electives    (33 semester credit hours)

May be courses in areas described above or in other areas, such as Business, Graphic Design, applied music/art, etc.

Learning Outcome Goals for BA - Psychology

 

Argosy University has identified competencies which represent the learning outcomes for an individual who successfully completes a Bachelors of Arts degree.

Review the  The Learning Outcomes for the BA in Psychology - Note the new Learning Outcome on Interpersonal Effectiveness (#7), effective Fall, 2007.

In addition to course activities and grades, students' progress towards meeting outcome learning goals will be evaluated through:

  • Student Self-Appraisal Form
  • Student Writing Portfolio
  • Major Field Test (MFT)
